Netflix TV Show Recommendations

I have been a lover of TV shows for as long as I can remember so I have created a list of my favorite shows Netflix has to offer. This list consists of reality tv and dramas. For each recommendation, I have written a brief summary of the show. (Some descriptions may contain spoilers)

Gilmore Girls

This TV show is based on the relationship between a single mother (Lorelai Gilmore) and her daughter (Rory Gilmore). Lorelai moves away to a small town in Connecticut shortly after giving birth. As Rory gets older, she wants to attend Harvard University but Lorelai does not make enough to support this dream. She wants to make this dream happen for her daughter so she reaches out to wealthy parents that she has a complicated relationship to help with the funding. The only condition her parents have is to have weekly dinners with both of them. Throughout the series, we see this ongoing conflict between Lorelai and her parents. We also get to witness the small-town environment of Stars Hollow and the best-friend relationship between Rory and Lorelai.

 

Love Island

In the Love Island series, a group of singles is placed inside a villa that is isolated from the outside world and they are under 24hr surveillance. The singles try to couple up at the end of the week and if they are not in a couple with someone, they will be dumped from the island. The couples are constantly being tested on their relationship by new women and men being introduced in the villa. At the end of the series, the public votes on who is the best couple, and that couple will win $100,000.

 

Survivor

A group on contestants are thrown in a remote location (typically in teams) where they have to learn how to survive in the elements. This includes building shelter, cooking, finding food, etc. The show supplies them with a sack of rice, reusable water bottles, a water well, a fire starter, and a bag to store their personal items. They are constantly under surveillance and frequently compete in challenges. There is a reward challenge where the team that wins receives a fun reward, typically in the form of food or comfort. The other challenge is immunity where the winning team/person receives immunity and will not be voted out in the coming tribal council. Once there are 2-3 people left, the contestants previously voted out will vote on who deserves to take home a million dollars.

 

The 100

Survivors of a damaging nuclear war are housed in a spaceship on Earth’s orbit since the war has wiped out almost all life on Earth. 97 years later, they send down 100 juvenile delinquents to determine if Earth is habitable again. The series involves the teens exploring this new world and the struggles of building a new “community. They soon find out they are not the only ones on Earth and they learn to adapt to their new home.

 

Big Brother

Contestants are placed in an isolated hour that is under constant surveillance where they have a set food budget each week. Each week, a contestant is voted out of the house. They can avoid being voted out by forming alliances, winning the power of veto challenge, winning the head of household challenge, or be saved by the public. The winner at the end of the series who has the most votes will win a large amount of cash.

 

All American

This series involved Spencer James, a high school football player from South Crenshaw High School that is recruited to Beverly High School. He is conflicted about whether to stay in South L. A with his family or move to his coach’s house in Beverly Hills. Throughout the series, Spencer tries to juggle his life in both the lower and upper classes while working towards his goal of being a pro football player.

 

All American Homecoming

This is a spin-off of the TV show All American where we continue to follow the life of Simon Hicks. She decides to attend a historically black college called Bringston University where her Aunt is a professor. Attending this university is also Damon Sims who is a ranked high school baseball prodigy. This series takes us through the life of Damon and Simon as they try to juggle their college life and athletic careers.

 

Vampire Diaries

Two vampire brothers, Stefan and Damon Salvatore return to their hometown of Mystic Falls where they meet Elena Gilbert. Stefan falls in love with Elena and Damon tries to get in between them. Damon wants to ruin Stefan’s life ever since he made him turn into a vampire over 100 years ago. As the tune goes on, Damon rekindles his relationship with Stefan and ends up falling in love with Elena as well. Both brothers try to protect Elena from the constant supernatural threats throughout the series.

The Originals

This is a spin-off of the show The Vampire Diaries and is set in New Orleans. It involves a family of thousand-year-old vampires called the Mikaelsons. They try to take back the city they built from Marcel, former protégé of Klaus Mikaelson, that over the town in their absence. In addition to taking over the town, they prepare for the safe arrival of Klaus’s miracle baby. The family has to fight off witches, werewolves, vampires, and even humans to ensure the baby is safe.

 

Wentworth

This show involves around the lives of inmates and prison staff of Wentworth Correctional Centre. The arrival of Bea Smith shakes things up in the prison due to her gusty and fearless ruling. Throughout the series, we get to witness life behind closed bars and the personal stories of some of the inmates.

 

Riverdale

The death of Jason Blossom, a popular high school student from the most powerful family, shakes up Riverdale. Archie and his friends try to solve the case of Jason Blossom while unintentionally revealing the evils lurking in the small town.
